What Is the Mold Remediation Process?

April 8, 2020 by Kingsley LLC

mold in the corner of a home that will be tested and remediatedFinding mold in your home is not only unpleasant, it’s also dangerous. Mold can cause health issues and breathing problems, particularly for those who already have difficulty breathing. It can also weaken the structure of your home, leaving it vulnerable to more damage that will require expensive repairs as it worsens. Hiring mold remediation specialists as soon as possible after noticing mold in your home can help you avoid these problems. They have a full understanding of the mold remediation process and can complete the task in far less time.

The Mold Remediation Process

Mold remediation is a thorough removal process that not only takes the mold out of your home but also prevents it from recurring.

Inspection & Mold Damage Assessment

Before your specialist begins the mold remediation process, they will carefully inspect your home and assess the damage. This helps them identify the extent of the damage and create a plan for remediation. Specialists consider aspects such as safety and health, pressure differentials, and removing and handling contaminated materials.

Mold Containment

The mold remediation specialist will use one of three containment procedures. The first, usually used for moderate or limited areas of mold growth, is local containment in which a structure is built around an area of mold and treated with vacuums and air filters. For larger areas of mold growth, specialists use full-scale containments. These separate unaffected areas from affected areas by using polyethylene barriers. They use negative pressure, vacuums, and air filters inside the affected area..

Air Filtration

The use of proper ventilation and air filtration devices during remediation help keep spores within the contaminated area, again limiting their ability to spread to other parts of your home. It also ensures that your breathing and health are not affected by airborne mold spores. Air filtration helps clean the air and make it safer to breathe, keeping you and your family healthy during and after the remediation process. In addition to external air filtration tools, your mold remediation specialist may wear a face mask and breathing device. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the mold in your home is more dangerous. It’s simply an extra precaution for their own health.

Removing Mold & Mold Infested Materials

The mold removal process can now begin. The specialist will begin using HEPA vacuuming to filter and trap mold. This is the most important part of the process, as it can effectively filter 99.97% of all particles, a much higher rate than any standard vacuum that can be purchased or rented from a shop. However, porous or wet items like couches, carpets, and clothing will still most likely need to be thrown away entirely.

Cleaning of the Area

Specialists use brushes and scraping tools to dislodge mold to then filter the area using HEPA vacuums. After the process is complete, a mold remediation specialist will use safe detergents and disinfectants to clean walls and floors. They will also clean and disinfect tables, shelves, and other non-porous items that were affected by the mold. They may use biocides, depending on their professional judgment, to ensure the mold destruction and prevent its return.

Restoration

Finally, your home can be restored to its original state after the entire removal and disinfection process is done. This may mean that it is time for you to shop for new carpets or clothes. Your mold remediation specialist may be able to give you some tips, depending on your home and the affected area, about where the source may be and what could help prevent the spread again.

Kingsley really helped us in our time of need. Our house flooded from our upstairs bathroom, water was everywhere. They came the same day I called and immediately started removing carpet and setting up machines. They charged nothing upfront and worked payment out with our insurance company. That alone is worth a 5 star review. We very pleased with the time and care they took with us and our home.

Mike is the best person I met during my water leak problem. Long to short: if you are lucky to hire Mike (if his schedule is free), you will have amazing service. He works with you and your insurance. Most of well known firms try to charge double of Mike's estimate and try to take advantage of YOUR insurance.I am so happy that Mike handled my problem. Thanks and God bless you!

Mike Kingsley and company are the BEST hands down! Mike was responsive and prompt in addressing my issues and concerns. Kingsley was able to remove all the mold and demo everything from under the house where the mold was and then dry everything to prevent any further damage from the water. Kingsley and his team were very professional and considered of all that I had going on. Mike spoke with the insurance company and followed up with all they needed as well as what I needed. I would definitely give them the highest recommendation possible.
